From the Front:
As a freelance audio engineer who is also working to build a studio of his own, Sam Turner uses JDK Audio gear through the Ebbw Vale Institute Studio in Wales. Alongside his work partner, Sam Jump, he produces and engineers
bands primarily from Wales.
"I have used the R22 compressor on just about everything; even the master bus at the end of a mix. I always use it to track acoustic guitars for some added sparkle in the high end. I love the R22 for its ability to smooth out a harsh bass track without reducing any presence, or really bring a vocal take to the front of the mix without it sounding as if it is fighting the compressor (even at high compression ratios). Finally, it glues all the parts of a mix together without changing the tonal qualities, which is what I prefer when compressing a whole mix.
"I use the R20 pre amp when I am looking for an extremely clean tone, and don't want to alter the character of the microphone. It is brilliant at producing a clean and smooth signal for vocals. The R20 is a great choice for pop vocals, or even something more delicate. It's certainly a go-to when looking for crystal clear vocals.
"Before you even use these pieces of gear, you have to admire the design. Somehow the battle tank-esque appearance makes them look very attractive, and instantly makes you feel that they are going to last a very long time."
