From the Front:
"The JDK R22 was my first outboard compressor. I wanted to start my rack with a quality piece that would be a useful workhorse tool for both tracking and mixing. I'm a huge API fan so I was stoked when I first heard of JDK by a fellow engineer. He recommended the R22 and I trust his advice so I went for it. When it arrived I plugged it in and the search was over, this was the compressor I needed!
"I first tried it on the mix bus and it performed great there. It sounded bigger and cleaner than the plugins I had been using. It was doing its job without getting in the way. It glues the tracks together without messing with the stereo image or the overall sound of the mix, which is great when you need subtle transparent compression.
"By far my favorite application for the R22 is on drums. The first time I tried it on some drum tracks, I was blown away. The THRUST feature is great here and with just a few db of gain reduction, drums sound punchier and bigger. There hasn't been a single drum track I've mixed that hasn't passed through the R22 in some form. There is just something about it that makes drums come to life. I've tried to replicate the sound with my other compressors or even plugins but I always go back to the R22.
"The more I use it the more it exceeded my expectations, it is such a useful piece of gear. It's simple to use yet offers just the right amount of features to be versatile for both mixing and tracking. Anyone could benefit by having one in their rack, you can't go wrong with this unit. It might not be as aggressive as other compressors, but it's hard to make it sound bad.
"It's a unique little green box that looks great, is built like a tank and sounds amazing. I want a second one!"
About C-Martin Recordings:
C-Martin Recordings is a small business divided into 2 locations. One is a huge rehearsal/recording space where a lot of the tracking takes place, located near downtown Montreal. The other is an acoustically treated mixing room which contains a variety of outboard gear. C-Martin also does re-amping here with a small collection of tube guitar amps including some classics like the JTM-45 and Mark IV. The setup is also configured to be mobile so we are able to do live jam recordings and production work directly in the band's own rehearsal space.
